Life is Art
Life is Art and for me there are
no boundaries separating them. I perform and direct to
learn how to live more fully and I live fully so that I may practice my
craft with boldness and mastery.
When I cannot practice my craft
my life diminishes and a part of me dies. I must practice to reinvent
myself and society. I must practice to learn cultural fluency and to
govern my life's transitions and experience my Renaissance. I approach
theater with trust, strength in my vulnerability and acknowledgement of the
Mystery. I try to use the theatrical event to honor our stories, give
voice to our song, and to become what we behold.
Art cannot exist only in the
hallowed halls of our civic centers and universities or for any particular
elite. Nor can it exist for mere entertainment of the ego. It
cannot be used to keep us complacent or stuffed full of ourselves. It
must speak the simple language of the heart and call us to become more fully
human. It must call with the urgency of our times and synthesize
something more from the sum of our disjointed parts.
I try to hear the orchestra of
life by living with the homeless, passing through my beloved nation as the
'other', making pilgrimages to the Mecca within our minds and bowing to
those that walked before me. I seek to work with all those who come
willing to work and play, to recognize the insanity, and to rehearse the art
and science of mutual transformation.
